English Literature Courses at RC Palmer

Literary Studies and Creative Writing 10 

This course is designed for students who enjoy reading and want to focus on literature from a certain time period, place, or with specific ideas/themes. You will dive deeper into literature by exploring particular topics, eras, authors, or parts of the world through stories, poems, and plays. The class also helps you greatly improve your writing skills and teach you how to analyze literature across different styles. You'll work closely with supportive classmates, collaborating to develop your skills as you design and write your own work.

Incentive Composition and Literary Studies 10

In this course, you will focus on reading stories and poems connected to a specific historical era, location, or set of big ideas. It allows you to study literature closely by concentrating on particular topics, time periods, authors, or different parts of the globe through creative writing. The class is also designed to significantly strengthen your ability to write and help you learn to understand and analyze different styles of text. With the support of your classmates, you'll work together to build your skills throughout the process of planning and creating your own writing pieces.

Literary Studies 11

This course lets students dig deep into literature while also working on key learning skills (core competencies). You will explore specific themes, time periods, authors, or places around the world by reading different works, including both fiction and non-fiction. You are encouraged to read for enjoyment, but also to use critical thinking in various ways, meaning you'll be expected to develop advanced, higher-level thinking. Finally, you will improve your reading and writing skills by carefully studying texts that are both challenging and from many different cultures.

Incentive Literary Studies 11

This course uses literary themes to drive class discussions, critical thinking, and different kinds of writing. You will practice various forms, such as narratives, descriptions, arguments (persuasive), and opinion pieces. A main focus is on mastering style and language, learning how to write effectively for different audiences and subjects. When doing research, you will be taught how to cite sources, judge the credibility of evidence, and check the overall quality of your information.

Literary Studies 12 (Elective)

This course gives students the chance to focus deeply on literature by reading texts that get progressively more challenging. You get to choose from many different literary topics so you can follow what you are most interested in, while also improving your reading and writing skills. The class will help you strengthen all your English Language Arts abilities both expressing your ideas like writing and speaking and understanding what you read and hear. Additionally, this course will help you grow into a more educated citizen of the world.

Creative Writing 12 (Elective)

This course is for students who want to create a large collection of work that shows advanced and deep skills in writing. You will get chances to focus on a specialty and publish your work in real-life settings. Students will explore their own personal and cultural stories and memories through writing in many different styles. You will work with classmates to improve your skills through the whole writing and design process, and we'll celebrate your achievements. By the end, you'll be able to write complex pieces in controlled formats with great skill.
