Social Studies Courses at RC Palmer
Humanities 8
This course combines English and Social Studies to help you grow your communication and thinking skills. You will study how stories and writing help us understand ourselves and our world. The class covers major cultural and political changes from the 7th century to the 1750s, with a focus on the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
Incentive Humanities 8
In this advanced course, you will explore the same time period while adding studies of the Tudors and the Reformation. This course includes extra activities like independent research, group debates, and projects designed to help you think critically and creatively.
Social Studies 9
This course looks at Western Civilization from the 1600s to the 1800s. You will learn about the big changes in technology and society that shaped the modern world, the history of Canada before it became a country, and how colonialism has affected Indigenous peoples.
Incentive Social Studies 9
Along with the standard lessons, this course looks at major global issues from 1750–1919 in much more detail. You will take part in advanced research projects and discussions that connect historical events to modern countries, including Canada.
Social Studies 10
This course focuses on how Canada’s government works and different ideas about the economy. You will study Canada’s changing identity in the world and unfair policies from the past. There is a strong focus on First Peoples’ leadership and the process of Truth and Reconciliation.
Incentive Social Studies 10
Students in this course cover the standard Grade 10 lessons while taking part in advanced projects. This includes independent study and group talks where you can dive deeper into topics that interest you most.
Explorations in Social Studies 11
This is a course that lets you try out many different topics. You might study 20th-century inventions, global Indigenous issues, or how modern media affects us. It is designed to be flexible and focus on things that are important in the world today.
Incentive Explorations in Social Studies 11
This course focuses heavily on student research. You will be expected to explore special interests through large projects and debates to sharpen your ability to analyze information.
20th Century World History 12
This course examines the global results of World War I, the rise of powerful dictators, and the Cold War. You will study movements for human rights, how people move around the world, and the fast changes in technology and travel that shaped the 1900s.
Law 12
This course gives you an overview of the legal system in Canada. You will explore our rights and responsibilities and see how the law can change society. Activities include a trip to the Vancouver Law Courts and a mock trial where you act out a court case.
BC First Peoples 12
This course focuses on the diverse cultures and experiences of First Peoples in British Columbia. You will look at how colonialism affected their systems and how these communities continue to challenge those impacts and work toward reconciliation.
Psychology 12
Psychology is the study of the human mind and why people act the way they do. You will learn about personality, intelligence, how people behave in groups, and mental health. This course helps you understand yourself and others better.
